On Saturday, November 23rd the Jacksonville Men's side headed up I-95 for a battle with the Savannah Shamrocks, a team unknown to this group for over 10 years. With the rolling fields of Daffin Park prepared and wonderful 62 Degrees to bare, the game went off without a hitch. Jacksonville brought 21 players to match Savannah's 26 man-roster. The game started with an immediate scrum, a foreshadow of the forward battle that was to come. After a split of possession for the first 15 minutes, something had to give as Inside Center Stephen Woolley nailed a ~40m Penalty kick to put JaxRFC up 3-0. Savannah would be quick to respond with a vicious goal-line assault using their forward pack which ended in their 8-man Desmond Tucker to punch one in on a pick-and-go with a conversion from Flyhalf TJ Fonmanu to make it 3-7 after the first 20 minutes. Never down an out, Jacksonville would proceed to strike again with an interception turned kick-chase from Stephen Woolley which would lead Jacksonville 8-man Yazen Al-Kuisi to put another 5 on the board with Woolley sealing the conversion to make it 10-7 at half time.
After some water and a rest, the real test would begin as the second half would bring Five yellow cards between both teams as JaxRFC's Justin Dennerlien kicked off that cascade with a high tackle getting him 10 minutes in the sin bin. No matter, Flyhalf Robert Johns would get a clean breakaway to score an unassisted try to bolster the Old Grey's lead to 15-7. With ball remaining largely between the 22's for the next 10 minutes, Savannah would once again assault the try-line with their lumbering forwards leading to Tight head prop Roy Artolozaga to get the job done, bringing the score back within 3. On the following kickoff, Jacksonville Second row Chris Wilson would get his first Yellow card of the season for an unsafe ruck, making it almost 20 consecutive minutes of Jacksonville playing a man down. No worry as Savannah's Will Garnett and Fernando Jaquez would get back-to-back yellow cards giving JaxRFC the man advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
To help secure the victory, Jacksonville opted for an 8m penalty kick, giving them 3 points and the ball back but as what seemed all but certain, tragedy struck. After a high tackle, Jacksonville Second row Luis Elias was sent off with a yellow card, setting the stage for a Penalty Try awarded to Savannah due to them having an Offsides advantage. With the penalty try and a minute left in the match, Savannah would go on to win it 18-19. Despite the heartbreaker in Georgia, JaxRFC bounces back to face its final tournament of the season in Daytona Beach in two weeks time. For his breakaway try and defensive prowess, Flyhalf Robert Johns was awarded Man of the Match.
